Municipal water systems are under increasing pressure to address a diverse and evolving range of groundwater contaminants—from nitrate and hardness to emerging constituents like PFAS—while keeping operating costs manageable. Recent advancements in steady state high recovery reverse osmosis (RO) have transformed the economics of RO, making it a more feasible option for municipalities that previously viewed the technology as too energy intensive or maintenance heavy for full scale use. The session will outline the engineering considerations behind Prescott’s treatment strategy, the economic and regulatory factors that justified RO over alternative technologies, and early operational observations from the system’s startup period.
