This session examines how simple trade off modeling can be used to balance the three most critical—and often competing—performance attributes of pool and spa filter cartridges: durability, cleanability, and filtration efficiency. Participants will explore how variations in material structure, fiber geometry, surface treatments, and media architecture influence these attributes and why enhancing one property frequently affects the others. The discussion will unpack the interconnected nature of durability, cleanability, and filtration efficiency by looking at how mechanical strength, chemical resistance, surface energy, pore accessibility, fouling behavior, particle capture mechanisms, and pore size distribution interact within cartridge media. Case examples will demonstrate how specific material design decisions shift the balance between long service life, ease of cleaning, and particle capture.
