Both human performance and behavior-based safety are effective approaches to improve organizational safety culture. Unfortunately, HP and BBS are sometimes positioned as competing methodologies. Some BBS advocates believe HP fails to systematically analyze/improve safety behaviors, and some HP proponents claim BBS unfairly targets the worker and ignores system deficiencies. In reality, both approaches emphasize improving process/system factors, safety leadership, peer-to-peer feedback and increased employee engagement for safety. This session will address ways to combine the best elements of both approaches, including principles and actionable tools, to improve safety culture and prevent serious injuries and fatalities.
