This collection of oral histories, inspired by the ASU West Black History Month gala honoring an African American Pioneer in Arizona, chronicles not just the individual achievements of African Americans in metro Phoenix over the past century, but it illuminates the impact that their work has had on the social, cultural, and political lives of the state. The interviews include such luminaries as the late Dr. Eugene Grigsby, Betty Fairfax, and Judge Jean Williams, as well as those still actively engaged as political and civic activists, educators, clergy, families, cotton pickers, and plain old, salt-of-the-earth men and women. Each of the pioneers faced major obstacles requiring courage and conviction to overcome and to strengthen the Arizona community. In sum, this work shares stories about African Americans in Arizona told in their own words. For more information, email aanokye@asu.edu.
