MAD magazine has looked at the world through smart, satirical eyes for almost 70 years and influenced multiple generations to distrust advertisers, politicians, celebrities, hypocrites, and blowhards of all stripes. It introduced the world to Fold-ins, Spy vs. Spy, Drawn-out Dramas, The Lighter Side, Horrifying Clichés, The Shadow Knows, and Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions. It injected potrzebie, axolotl, fershlugginer, veeblefetzer, 43-Man Squamish, and Alfred E. Neumann’s gap-toothed grin into our consciousness. We’ll hit the high points of MAD history, appreciate famous movie and TV parodies, check out some famous MAD covers, and revel in the work of dozens of The Usual Gang of Idiots: Martin & Mingo, Kurtzman & Kuper, Clarke & Coker, Davis & Drucker, Berg & Bunk, Prohias & Porges, Freas & Fowler, Richmond & Rickard, Elder & Edwing, Wood & Woodbridge & Wolverton. We’ll learn how it took congressional hearings to convert MAD from a comic book to a magazine. We’ll rollick through the various facets of their media empire: comic books, magazines, paperbacks, television shows. You’ll hear about Alan’s sweet visit to MAD’s NYC offices in the spring of 1978. Virtually every comedian and satirist of the last 60 years cites them as an influence and inspiration; come find out why!
