The Louisville & Indiana Railroad required replacement of Bridge 40.19 over the Flatrock River in Columbus, Indiana to upgrade the level of service along the line. The existing through truss structures were in deteriorated condition and within the 100-year flood elevation. J.B. Fay Company was selected to deliver the project as a Design-Build team with Patrick Engineering Inc. as the engineering subconsultant. The team was responsible for the engineering design (survey, geotechnical, rail, and structural), hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analysis, permitting, and construction. A four-day outage including a bridge slide-in was planned for the bridge change out. The new bridge was designed to facilitate the aggressive schedule and to minimize the track outage during construction. The bridge was comprised of a main single-span through plate girder bridge with thirteen prestressed concrete box beams approach spans. The drilled shafts for each bridge bent were built outside the existing bridge prior to the outage. During the outage, precast bent caps were secured to the drilled shafts using steel W-shapes installed in pockets and filled with early strength concrete. In addition to the bridge replacement, improvements included raising the track profile 5-feet to provide the low bridge chord 1-foot freeboard above the Q100 flood elevation. The H&H and environmental permitting were challenging elements of the design process given the project is located within an area of special flood hazard. Other challenges included difficult soil conditions, design-build sequencing and coordination, adhering to an aggressive track outage schedule and working around flooding conditions during construction. *Missed this Session or want to view it again?
