08 Apr 19
1:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Tracks: Firefighting

Firefighters respond to many fires in buildings of ordinary construction; they present many challenges associated with the construction methods and materials, heavy timber truss roofs, and renovations that include replacement of legacy structural components with lightweight structural components. Additionally, the use and occupancy of these buildings, especially commercial buildings, place these fires in high-rises in many jurisdictions, making them low-frequency events. Detailed information on the materials and methods used in buildings of ordinary construction is presented. Included are case studies of buildings under renovation and fires in buildings of ordinary construction. Class objectives are reinforced with National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports and video clips.
