e-POSTER: Is Hydrogen Energy Storage Ready for Prime Time on the North American Grid?

21 May 19
9:30 AM - 9:55 AM

Tracks: Emerging Applications, Poster Presentations

In this presentation, the audience will learn if hydrogen (H) storage (HS) is ready for prime time. The author first discusses the financial and technical principles of the levelized cost (LC) method for computing the cost of storing of wind energy (LCOS). The author presents a LC algorithm. The algorithm equations are presented. To compute the LCOS, the algorithm requires nine energy storage plant specifications (specs). The author’s LCOS algorithm is technologically agnostic between a pumped storage plant (PSP) and a hydrogen storage plant (HSP). Each participant will be able to download the author’s Excel LCOS algorithm comparison workbook. The author first demonstrates the LC algorithm in a PSP case study with published specs for the Cabin Creek Pumped Hydro Storage Plant (300 MW│1,450 MWh) [Georgetown, CO 80444]. The author uses the Cabin Creek case study to discuss the PSP technology, to show how the nine Cabin Creek specs are compiled and to compute the PSP LCOS. Then the author presents a second PSP case study. Next, the author presents two HSP case studies. The author uses the HSP case studies to discuss the HS technology, to show how the nine HSP specs are compiled and to compute the HSP LCOS. After this, the author uses his Excel LCOS comparison workbook to compare datasets of PSP specs with datasets of HSP specs. Finally, the presentation ends with the author comparing the computed PSP LCOS with the computed HSP LCOS.
