Applications for LIDAR systems continue to multiply in such diverse fields such as autonomous driving, atmospheric science, terrain mapping, oceanography among many others, in a large part by improving costs, performance and availability of key components. Optical filters, which are used either at the receiver to isolate the launch laser from background light, or at the transmitter to clean up its spectral characteristics, are one such critical component. This paper will discuss the latest developments in thin film optical filters for LIDAR and the tradeoffs designers must make in designing them into real world systems including cone angle acceptance issues, transmission and blocking requirements, bandwidth, spectral squareness, temperature and environmental issues, and physical dimensions.
