Optical Coatings in Consumer Electronics - The Transition from Personal Devices to Ambient Computing

From televisions to smart phones, dozens of optical coatings are found in many consumer electronic devices. Some are essential to the performance of the device, while others are decorative and considered just as important. A wide range of sensors are now found in personal electronics, enabling these devices to become more aware of their surroundings. Many user interactions are now context-dependent. A new trend is toward multi-device interactions, or the so-called “Internet of Things”. Taking another step, we find Ambient Computing with seamless handoffs from one device to another as the user moves around expressing changing contexts. Many devices and many sensors are required, with numerous optical coatings.
