Tracks: Protective, Tribological and Decorative Coatings

Chrome plating is used for decades as protective and decorative layer against corrosion, despite of hazardous waste problem. The invincible resistance to corrosion, very low cost and very high production throughput have let those conventional physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques unachievable. High power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) as an advanced PVD technique having high level of ionization degree, high plasma density and the consequent dense film structure, could possibly use as a clean alternative to chrome plating. In this study, chromium was used as the target material by using HIPIMS to deposit Cr-N coatings on brass. Multilayer structure consisted of metal chromium and chromium nitride was tailored in different combinations to reveal the corrosion resistance. Ultimately, some of these combinations are superior in corrosion resistance resulted from polarization test and field test.
