Not least because of the cost-effective inline PECVD equipment for the deposition of the rear-side passivation stack, the Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) technology has been established as a new standard in silicon PV cell manufacturing. This contribution will show how further increased cell production capacity, higher throughput and hence further decreased cell manufacturing costs are achieved while retaining reliable and stable process results. As the market share of PERC technology in the PV industry continues to grow, the solar community has already begun looking for further improvements to increase cell and module power while lowering the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). Standard PERC technology suffers from high recombination losses at the front- and rear-side metal contacts. Heterojunction as well as Passivated contact technology are two different approaches to solve this problem in order to reach efficiencies above 23.0%. This presentation gives an overview about the state of the art, achieved laboratory and mass production efficiencies, economies of scale. The second part of the presentation focuses on hard, scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coatings as well as barrier films utilizing PECVD technology. It addresses the versatility of that technology used in the fields of Automotive, Consumer electronics, Panel Level Packaging, Smart Glasses and OLED Thin Film Encapsulation. By adapting the hardware and process conditions, the technology allows to solve technical or manufacturing issues for different applications and production requirements. Based on the example of establishing the MW + RF dual mode inline method, it is discussed here how one can meet and exceed the specifications of the respective industries.
