N4A Concurrent Workshop Group III: Diversity Topics Track - iBelieve: Designing the Blueprint for Success Among African-American Male Students (Room Salons 1-2)

Sponsored by Game Plan

Based on national statistics, African-American male student-athletes who attend large institutions are under-performing academically in comparison to other student-athletes nationally. While African American male student-athletes graduate at lower rates than other groups, they are over-represented in the revenue generating sports, football and basketball. The opportunity to attend universities and compete on the field and court is viewed as an opportunity for them to access higher education. Still, they often lag behind their white counterparts, specifically at NCAA Power 5 institutions. The iBelieve Initiative aims to strengthen the mindset of African American males through identity and resiliency and encourage academic success, retention and graduation.
