N4A Concurrent Workshop Group III: Small Program Track - The Silverlinings Playbook: How to Support Mental Health Needs with Limited Resources (Room Boston)

Sponsored by Game Plan

The mental health & well-being of our student-athletes has become a top priority on college campuses. We all know we care about the mental health needs of students, but with limited resources, what are we able to accomplish? We have a playbook for that. In this session, participants will be able to learn strategies for how to better support the mental and emotional health needs of the student-athlete population with limited resources. Participants will also learn ways to utilize other areas of support (funding, administration, coach buy-in) to help facilitate mental health and wellness. Take a walk down memory lane with UNCG as we discuss the years leading up to creating a Mental Health Support Team within athletics which eventually led to the hiring of our Sports Psychologist. We will discuss the challenges we have faced and the overwhelming success the program has had on our students, coaches, and athletic support staff. Participants will walk away with tools to better understand how to start their own mental health support team, how to work with constituents on campus to help them understand the unique lives of student-athletes and how to empower their own departments to continuing to support the needs of the student-athlete population.
