- Battling Fatigue and Sleep Deprivation in EMS
Moderator: Dan Patterson, EMT-P, PhD
Join EMS researcher Dan Patterson, PhD, EMT-P for a discussion of fatigue and sleep deprivation, conditions that affect more than half of all EMS personnel with 50% reporting inadequate recovery between shifts. With greater than 80% of EMS personnel working more than one job or extended shift durations of 48 hours or longer in some locations, these issues must be addresses by emergency services agencies to curtail unnecessary injuries, deaths and medical errors. Dan will review the 2018 Evidence Based Guidelines for fatigue risk management and teach you how to effectively manage fatigue and sleep deprivation in your agency to reduce risk and negative outcomes.
- Cameras in Ambulances: What You Should Know Before Recording
Moderator: Allison Bloom
EMS Attorney/paramedic Allison Bloom will discuss the use of audio and/or video recording on EMS calls. Although cameras used at the scene and in the ambulance can help improve scene safety, provide real-time documentation, and be used for training and quality improvement, there are ethical, privacy and legal considerations which must be addressed before putting cameras on EMS personnel and vehicles.

He explains how he believe you can and should turn the EMS Agenda 2050 vision into a reality.
- The Future of EMS Education

Nationally and internationally recognized for his efforts to address the needs of EMS education at all levels, Walt will share he thoughts and concerns on EMS education. This is an opportunity to explore the past, embrace the present and attempt to predict the future. Without question, we shall be required to adjust our thinking and methods of EMS instruction to meet the current needs as well as future direction of EMS educational programming. We must continue to think outside the box in terms of instructional design, development, implementation and evaluation.
- Gaining the Most from Your Agency’s Available Data
Moderator: Brooke Burton
Brooke Burton, NRP, FACPE, quality director for Gold Cross Ambulance in Utah, steering committee and board of trustees for the National EMS Quality Alliance, and the recipient of the American Ambulance Association 2016 award for Best Quality Improvement Program will discuss why your agency should focus on more than retrospective chart review. She will introduce you to the basic concepts of performance improvement and discuss how data can be turned into improvement projects and help your agency provide better patient care.
- Improving Patient Communication
Moderator: Kate Dernocoeur
Join author of “Streetsense”, JEMS Columnist and veteran EMS provider and firefighter Kate Dernocoeur for a discussion of interpersonal communication methods needed to ensure your safety and effectiveness at emergency scenes. She will discuss the ability to “read” situations and reach into your tool bag to succeed at talking to strangers in crisis all the time. She will discuss why certain strategies work (or don’t work and what you can do from the moment of dispatch through hand-off, to shine in your work through use of a host of communication tools.
- Ketamine, A powerful tool, Five Applications for EMS
Moderator: Jared Ross, MD
Ketamine is an old analgesic and dissociative anesthetic that’s recently gained traction in EMS. It’s inexpensive, has an excellent safety profile and multiple routes of administration, making it an optimal medication for EMS. It also has a wide therapeutic range, making it ideal for multiple EMS applications. DR, Ross will review five mainstream EMS protocols for Ketamine administration along with indications, contraindications, and dosing. He’ll help you understand common adverse effects and how to treat those reactions. He will also discuss three emerging applications for Ketamine in the prehospital setting.
- Leadership Reimbursement and Funding Strategies
Moderator: Vince Robbins, FACPE, FACHE
Join Vince Robbins, the longtime president and CEO of MONOC, New Jersey’s largest EMS system, for a discussion of leadership strategies to help your agency move forward during a time of uncertainty. He will review where he sees America’s EMS systems heading with reimbursement and funding, Robbins, past president of the National EMS Management Association, will discuss the financial status of EMS systems across the country and current congressional activity related to reimbursement.
- Mental Health Needs for Our Members
Moderator: Dena Ali, A-EMT, CIT, MPA, FF
The discussion will cover the prevalence of mental health disorders among first responders and the many resources available. While mental health disorders are common, tractable, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed about, lack of understanding has led to stigmatization that inhibits help seeking behaviors. During the discussion, Dena will also cover the components and need for peer support, common mental health disorders found among first responders, and methods for destigmatizing help seeking behavior.
- Protecting our crews Against Assault

With the recent surge in violence against firefighters, EMTs and paramedics, Robin Davis, Assistant Chief, EMS Operations with Sterling (VA) Rescue Squad, a 28-year veteran law enforcement officer and specialist in defensive tactics for EMS, will discuss how you should look at your own personal barriers to safety and learn strategies to break down these barriers. He’ll also teach you what a survival mindset is and why having it may save your life.
