PRE 2B | Comprehensive School Safety Planning: Supporting Students With Disabilities and Special Needs (Room Sun A)

It is not a matter of if, but when a crisis will impact a school. School crises can range in severity from food poisoning to transportation accidents to natural disasters and mass violence. To keep students safe and assist with recovery, schools must develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive school safety plans. Also known as emergency operation plans, these plans are necessary for the safety and well-being of all students. Federal law requires the creation of emergency plans to support students with disabilities and special needs; however, they are frequently an overlooked component. Benjamin Fernandez will discuss the federal laws associated with school safety, the five missions of preparedness, elements of comprehensive safety planning, and considerations for supporting students with disabilities and special needs within the school setting.
