I1 | The Safety of Students With Autism (Room Osceola C)

06 May 19
10:45 AM - 12:00 PM

Tracks: IDEA

Schools personnel are especially attuned to meeting the needs of students with autism, but often question the intersection of safety and special education laws. Attorney Darcy Kriha will address common challenges that educators of students with autism face such as elopement, the use of restraints and aversives, and the overriding responsibility of including safety drills into daily routines. She'll explain when districts can unilaterally implement a safety precaution versus when the IEP team must make the decision, how to respond to requests for GPS monitoring, and the importance of personal identification and preparing an emergency contact plan. You'll take away tips for incorporating safety practices and data into IEP goals, transition plans, and BIPs.
