Tracks: Behavior

During the 2015-16 academic year, over 291,100 students were referred to school-related arrest — 82,800 of whom were students with disabilities. This process in which youth are referred to law enforcement by schools is commonly referred to as the School-to-Prison Pipeline (STTP). Most disturbing is that it has been disproportionately affecting many marginalized groups of students, including minorities and students with disabilities. This presentation will explore the development of the STPP, describe the risk factors for this trajectory and its impact on the lives of students with disabilities, examine the current issues and trends of the STPP, and offer recommendations for school leaders and special educators to help stem the flow of the STPP.
