07 May 19
10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

Tracks: IDEA

This session will explore one of the major topics emerging in special education law: English learner students. You'll learn about recent cases and agency guidance affecting how educators program for ELs, including evaluation requirements, meaningful parental participation, and proper IEP services consistent with the law. Attorney Brandon Wright will review the basic civil rights requirements special educators must consider when planning for EL students. In addition, he will review the regulations and case law applicable to conducting proper and nondiscriminatory evaluations, writing legally compliant IEPs for EL students, and ensuring that non-English-speaking parents are afforded meaningful participation.
