Software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) are finally starting to gain traction in the cable industry as operators pursue innovative ways to meet growing bandwidth demands, boost service delivery and performance, slash operating costs and bring new products, services and features to market much faster than before. In fact, after getting off to a later start than the telco industry, cable is now moving quickly to stake out its own turf in the virtualization space, even leading the way in such critical aspects as the virtualization of access networks.

Following CableLabs' identification of three key components of next-gen cable networks – service orchestrator, NFV orchestrator and master SDN controller – in the past year, industry technologists are now working on developing the interfaces, standards and architectural framework to make cable virtual network functions (VNFs) a reality. But much more work must still be done to bring virtualized functions, devices and services to market.

In this special SCTE•ISBE breakfast roundtable session occurring right before the show's opening general session, leading MSO, SCTE•ISBE and vendor technologists will discuss the industry's early trials and pilot programs with SDN and NFV, the virtualization business use cases they are exploring, the results they are seeing so far and the challenges they must still overcome to bring virtualization to life.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Virtualization
  • SDN
  • NFV
  • SD-WAN
  • Distributed Access Architecture (DAA)
  • Virtual CCAP
  • ONAP
  • Orchestration
