Cable-Tec Expo 2018

Around the World of IoT (Room B401/402)

From a standards perspective, few fields are as cluttered as the Internet of Things -- or as ripe with potential opportunities for service providers. This three-part session aims to make sense of the IoT standards scene, while illuminating the potential for service-provider engagement in smart cities and smart assistants.
Technicolor’s Gary Gutknecht kicks things off with a deep dive into the IoT standards scene, including Thread, the Open Connectivity Forum, DotDot; associated wireless options like WiFi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, BLE, NB-IoT, LoRA and SixFox; and messaging protocols including CoAP, MQTT, HTTP and AQMP. He also reviews harmonization efforts among the standards at each layer.
Next, Hitachi Consulting’s Mark Stratton examines the state of smart IoT energy platforms for small- and medium-sized cable edge facilities, and other energy-saving opportunities enabled by IoT functions.
ARRIS’s Jonathan Wu reviews the use cases for smart assistants in service provider offerings. Also: The role of IoTivity and the OCF as a potential basis for an IoT hub and connection platform.
