Fleet Shops

This visit will include a tour of Salt Lake County Public Works Fleet’s state-of-the-art 40,000-square-foot truck maintenance shop constructed in 2014. The truck shop is LEED Gold certified. Efficiencies include heated floors, LED and abundant natural lighting, solar panels and R20 insulation throughout including the overhead doors. The surface of the shop floor was infused with a mixture of white cement and quartz, which doubled the surface tensile strength and improved light reflectibility. The parts room includes two vertical lift parts storage machines (VLMs) allowing for more efficient storage and retrieval of parts. The VLMs also reduced the footprint of the parts room by 33 percent, allowing for two additional shop service bays. The truck shop includes two lube bays and 18 work bays, six of which are two feet wider to accommodate arm repairs on side-load refuse trucks. Other shops on the site include light duty, heavy equipment, and weld shops. Salt Lake County Public Works Fleet services approximately 3,000 pieces of equipment and 20,000,000 miles per year, from track hoes to weed eaters.

CNG Fueling Facility

On the same site, you can visit the compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling facility. Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District serves 83,600 residents in Salt Lake County. All 46 of their packer trucks operate on natural gas.
