As enterprises and public organizations continue to adopt UAS, or drones, to assist with utilities inspection, public safety, mining, medical supply delivery, and more, airspace authorities are faced with an urgent demand for solutions to help integrate drones into existing air traffic management systems. In order to enable large-scale, complex drone operations for commercial purposes, comprehensive national Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) systems are needed to complement existing ATM environments.

Building a fully interoperable nationwide UTM system requires national authorities, UAS service providers (USPs), and industry to work together in developing systems that will allow for high-scale commercial drone operations to occur safely, compliantly, and in harmony with traditional manned aviation. Known as the “Home of Drones,” Switzerland has become a world leader in innovative drone integration. This enablement has been made possible by its investment in developing a comprehensive UTM system called the Swiss U-space Implementation (SUSI) framework.

In this presentation, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) alongside SUSI participants AirMap, Wing, and additional participants will share the latest in innovative drone operations being undertaken in Switzerland and how these cases are being supported by its investment and development of its UTM system. The presentation will share insights, lessons learned, and early outcomes from Swiss U-space implementation relevant to drone operators, enterprises, and authorities.
