Tracks: Advancements in Evidence-Based Design Research

This presentation clarifies how visibility as a design factor may enhance security in community hospital emergency departments (EDs). The ED is a high-risk workplace where staff are exposed to verbal and physical violence. The design layout in general, and visibility in particular, have been found to be important by previous explorations. In this session, presenters share the findings from a grant-funded qualitative research study focusing on the impact of visibility on security issues in five community hospital EDs. The presenters will also share the translation of the research conclusions into design solutions and share examples to inform future design decisions.
