A four-year federally funded patient safety-learning lab titled, “Realizing Improved Patient Care through Human-Centered Design in the OR (RIPCHD.OR) has resulted in in-depth research on operating rooms as well as the development of an OR prototype and high-fidelity OR mock-up. The concepts developed in this project were also implemented in a new ambulatory surgery center. This session presents findings from scenario-based simulation testing of the high-fidelity prototype and pre-occupancy evaluations conducted at the new ambulatory surgery center. The development of an interactive evidence-based OR design tool to support designers and clinicians in designing human-centered ORs will also be presented.
