The trend of designing decentralized nurses’ stations is hypothesized to increase nurse time at the bedside and improve quality of care. However, little is known about the impact of decentralization on communication and teamwork. As part of a post-occupancy study at the new Parkland Hospital, one objective was to understand how decentralized nursing models affect opportunities for vicarious learning amongst nurses. This session presents empirical findings from a mixed-methods study examining perspectives from nursing personnel following the move to the new hospital. Considerations for future decentralized designs, such as suggestions for improving staff retention and satisfaction, and additional characteristics that support observational and vicarious learning, will be discussed.
