Tracks: Clinical Perspectives

Simulation-based Clinical Systems Testing (SbCST) is a methodological approach to evaluate new healthcare design for its impact on patient safety. The healthcare built environment interacts with patients, equipment, and technology to impact patient safety and decisions made about the built environment during the design phase can sometimes have unintended effects that can lead to patient harm. These flaws are known as latent safety threats (LSTs). Many design teams are unfamiliar with how to evaluate a space for LSTs or ways to prevent these flaws from being incorporated into the final design. Integrating healthcare SbCST into the design process provides a methodical approach for evaluation of safety in the design without exposing patients to risk.
