Are our homes ready for home-based healthcare? The answer is no, and this poses a serious challenge to ongoing and emerging efforts to deliver more care in people’s homes as well as the desire of almost all people to live and be cared for in their homes. This session will present findings (and potential design solutions) from a design exploration into these emerging needs, highlighting shortcomings in residential designs that need to be addressed to ensure population health. More than 20 areas of design needs emerged from this exercise, many of which are non-existent in contemporary homes and most of which hinder resident safety and home healthcare.
