Tracks: Advancements in Evidence-Based Design Research

The purpose of this research study was to conduct a multiple method pre- and post-occupancy evaluation of an academic medical center’s new NICU. The prior unit was an open bay floor plan. The new 70-bed NICU at the center has six pods of approximately 12 single family rooms in each. This study evaluated the existing design features for perception of satisfaction and importance to the primary users of the space, the staff, and parents of the babies in the NICU. This study also evaluated the lighting conditions and acoustics. The findings of the study and their design implications will be presented.
