Thibodaux Regional Medical Center’s new Wellness Center, located in Thibodaux, La., was envisioned with the primary goal of making its community healthier. It is designed to improve the health and well-being of the bayou region through education, prevention, rehabilitation, sports, and wellness services. The center aims to create a clinical pathway that integrates wellness, where patients view their health and wellness as a collective entity.
The Wellness Center, open since October 2016, is the first of its kind in Louisiana. Three main components comprise the 225,505-square-foot five-story building: a central mall that runs down the center of the building and serves as the main circulation corridor; a wellness area, located to one side of the mall, that includes a fitness and recreation center with three swimming pools, lockers, studios, an indoor walking and running track, and volleyball and basketball courts; and a medical center, on the opposite side of the mall, with an imaging center and rehabilitation department. This area also includes additional medical office space to accommodate orthopedics, sports medicine, neurosciences, pain, spine, and weight management.
Education is another central goal of the Wellness Center, with a 10,000-square-foot education center. Located behind the reception desk, the education center contains classrooms and an auditorium while on the fifth floor, conference rooms host continuing education programs for doctors and specialists.
The LEED-certified building was developed on a greenfield site adjacent to and owned by the hospital. WHLC Architecture (Baton Rouge, La.) was engaged to expand the hospital campus and create a medically integrated facility that maintained a flexible layout.
The Wellness Center has spurred a second generation of commercial and residential development around the area. Additionally, the hospital already has plans for further expansion. Phase Two will be constructed behind the Wellness Center on 17 acres of land. It will include tennis courts, soccer fields, sand volleyball, pavilions, sports performance areas, and track and field areas.
