Technical Panel: Information-Centric Networking for Tactical Data Dissemination – Benefits and Challenges (Room Dallas)

Data dissemination is one of the fundamental requirements for tactical military networks. Academic and commercial research has recently led the development of Information Centric Networking (ICN), with Named Data Networking (NDN) and Content Centric Networking (CCN) being the most prominent architectures. However, tactical networking environments are typically heterogeneous and composed of multiple networking technologies with vastly different capabilities. Furthermore, they exhibit high network dynamics, limited bandwidth, variable latency, and are prone to disconnection. The NATO IST-161 Research Task Group on Efficient Group and Information Centric Communications in Mobile Military Heterogeneous Networks was established to examine the applicability of ICN to tactical networks. This panel will consist of members from this NATO task group as well as other researchers who will discuss the potential benefits of ICN as well as challenges to adopting ICN in such networks.
