Moderators:  Nathaniel P. Brooks, MD and Khoi D. Than, MD

The majority of spine surgeons practicing in United States and across the world do not practice minimally invasive techniques. As surgeons look forward to improve outcomes and minimize surgical times, MIS and endoscopic spine surgery are best options. This course will provide an overview of all MIS options including MIS and laser technology. This course will have participation from several companies for an unbiased and comparative advantage.

Course will constitute with basic approach to MIS surgery, pros and cons, patient selection, on all the procedures which will be provided before the course starts. Attendees are instructed to review through the presentations before the lab. This will be followed by some of the latest advances like laser endoscopy (LESS), augmented reality and navigation enabled Exoscope which have not been done before. MIS surgeries from incision to closure with demonstration and hands on opportunity will follow in cadaver lab. There will be advanced techniques like correction of deformity with MIS system for participants who would like to advance their MIS techniques.

Upon completion of this course, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Recognize the anatomy for MIS surgery;
  • Describe patient selection for each approach;
  • Integrate navigation/robotics into a minimally invasive practice setting;
  • Identify complications unique to MIS surgery and strategies to manage it;
  • Experience hands on techniques to start MIS practice;
  • Provide overview of augmented reality and LASER in spine.
