NASS 2019 Annual Meeting

Surgical Symposium: The Real Deal of the Opioid Crisis (Room Skyline Ballroom W375ab)

Moderator: John G. DeVine, MD

In 2017, 70,200 Americans died of a drug overdose with 68% of these deaths attributed to an opioid. The rates of overdose continue to rise yearly despite government interventions to stem the tide. This symposium will highlight perioperative pain management strategies that improve safety and reduce the burden of opioid management. A series of short, moderated lectures by content experts provides a backdrop for a discussion on desirable outcomes in care models.

Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Identify the factors that led to the opioid crisis;
  • Improve pre-surgical pain management to improve post-surgical opioid prescribing;
  • Recognize emerging solutions and alternatives to opioid prescribing for pain control.
