NASS 2019 Annual Meeting

Section on Biologics & Basic Research: Biologics in Spine Surgery: Back to the Future (Room Skyline Ballroom W375c)

25 Sep 19
3:35 PM - 5:05 PM

Tracks: Surgical

Moderator(s): Zorica Buser, PhD;

Moderators: Zorica Buser, PhD

The purpose of this symposium is to present attendees with a past, present and future look at the use of, and research into, the arena of biologics in spine surgery. This will include a review of technologies for promotion of spinal fusion, percutaneous treatment of osteoporotic fractures, treatment of symptomatic degenerative disc disease, and neuroregeneration following spinal cord injury. By incorporating cases as well as audience response system questions, at the end of the session, attendees will have knowledge of the breadth of biologic interventions, as well as the literature in support of them, that are currently in use, or are in development, for the management of a variety common spine conditions.

Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Identify potential interactions between graft materials for spine fusion;
  • Describe current research into novel injectable biologics for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures;
  • Identify new biologic therapeutics for symptom management and regeneration of degenerative disc disease;
  • Describe lines of research into the use of biologics for neuroregeneration in the setting of spinal cord injury.
