NASS 2019 Annual Meeting

Exercise Committee Presents: Back to the Future: Low Back Pain Disability and Episode Risk Reduction (Room Room W470b)

Moderator: Ryan A. Tauzell, PT, MA, Cert. MDT

Ridiculous amounts of time and money have been aimed at treating an episode of low back pain. All this time and money are producing worsening outcomes. However, could the outcome improve if the same effort were put into reducing the risk of an episode of low back pain and the associated disability? What if, instead of attempting to treat the already present episode of low back pain, the focus was on reducing the probability of that episode from happening? Appropriate exercise is well accepted as a valid and effective treatment for an episode of low back pain. Also, those that exercise and are physically fit live longer, healthier lives. An intuitive step is to promote appropriate exercise while the population is asymptomatic to reduce the future risk of a low back pain episode. This session is aimed at providing the essential background to help the spine provider promote exercise as a preventative measure against the escalating prevalence of disability associated with low back pain.

Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Describe the benefits of exercise on general health;
  • Identify the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle and the role of nutrition;
  • Recognize the methods of exercise utilized to promote spine health;
  • Integrate the tissue effects of work load into exercise recommendations;
  • Define the psychosocial and behavioral considerations associated with exercise;
  • Know the economics associated with low back prevention.
