FT02 | Fieldtrip 2: Robotics and Engineering Programs (Room Bus Shuttle Loading Area-- MBCC Level 1 Main Entrance)

14 Jan 20
8:30 AM - 2:00 PM
Miami Dade County Public Schools are proud to host five amazing school tours. Attendees need to arrive at the bus shuttle area in front of the MBCC by 8:30 am to select the tour they want to attend and be scanned. Fieldtrips will fill up on a first come, first serve basis until completely full. Rockway Middle School, a designated M-DCPS Silver S.T.E.A.M. school, is a public middle school for grades 6 -8 with a Magnet program. The Magnet program exposes students to the core concepts of technology in Robotics and Engineering. Instructional practices bridge the relationships among technologies and its connections with other fields of study. Utilizing highly critical thinking and research skills, such as, the Engineering Design Process, students solve real-world problems with technology as the center piece. In the Robotics and Engineering program, students design, develop, and evaluate creative and innovative open-ended solutions to everyday challenges applying the engineering design process. While exploring various engineering fields, RER teaches students to design, develop, and create robots to solve real-world problems and perform specific tasks within the fields of medicine, aerospace, automotive industry, and underwater exploration. The Robotics Laboratory provides the tools for students to design robots, and create them with a 3D printer. The robot models are tested and Project-Based Learning supports promotes student interaction as designers and builders, to make adjustments and collaborate on the final product. Students think critically throughout this process to meet robot specifications for local, national and international competitions such as the VEX Robotics World Championship. Rockway Middle School is a Magnet Schools of America 2019 School of Distinction.   Miami Coral Park Senior High School is a traditional public high school, grades 9 -12 with four S.T.E.M. focused Magnet programs in: Architecture, Biomedical Sciences, Construction, and Engineering & Robotics. Miami Coral Park received recognition from Newsweek Magazine as a Top 500 High School for Low-Income Students by U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools, and is a consistent recipient of Magnet Schools of America Merit Awards. The Magnets provide students with rigorous and inspiring curriculum that enrich students with a foundation of knowledge and skills in high-demand S.T.E.M. careers. Curriculum comprised of rigorous science, technology, engineering, and mathematical applications allow students to analyze possible solutions related to real-world scenarios through each Magnet program. The challenging Magnet curriculum frameworks include Dual Enrollment in courses such as C for Engineers, Java Programming, Computer Aided Design for Mechanical Engineers, Physics, Biology, and Computer Science to name a few, and an extensive offering of CollegeBoard Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including AP Capstone Seminar and Research to add another layer of rigor and opportunity for students. A partnership with Florida International University School of Engineering provides students with a unique opportunity to enhance their foundation of engineering principles and technology trends. Students engage in hands on application of their skillset through competitions, such as Bridge Building, Bots IQ High School Challenge, VEX Robotics World Championship and SECME, formerly known as the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering, tournament. Through utilization of modern scientific technology, field experiences, internships and partnerships students are empowered to use critical thinking skills and apply their knowledge to make real life connections in biomedical and engineering fields.
