Kitchen & Bath Lighting "College": From Theory to Practice (Room N230)

22 Jan 20
8:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Tracks: Design

So, you think you know lighting? It’s all changed. With the widespread adoption of LEDs and technological advances in the quantity, quality and efficiency of lighting, there has been more advancement in lighting in the past 5 years than in the past 5 decades. Incandescent light is dead, fluorescent lighting is on life support, and halogen lighting is coming down with something! Instead of a seminar that is all theory, or all product, or just pretty pictures of spectacular kitchens and baths, how about a workshop that will walk you through the basic of lighting and quickly introduce advanced theory, then show you how to apply that theory to kitchens and baths you are designing? There will be plenty of theory, product, and pretty pictures, but the focus is on giving you tools you can apply back home to improve the quality of the lighting in your design, be it dedicated LED fixtures (like in California) or screw in type fixtures the rest of the country uses. The principles are the same. Good lighting first and foremost needs to support health, safety and welfare, particularly for the senior demographic. But good lighting has positive benefits for everyone, young or old, and exciting research is being done on how Human Centric lighting can improve wellness, performance, and happiness. Academic and healthcare facilities are leading the way with demonstration projects, but the application for home environments is obvious. Bring an open mind and get ready to participate if you want in simple class demonstrations and actual kitchen and bath lighting layout exercises on paper. This two-hour workshop affords enough time to explore this important topic in more depth than a one-hour class. It’s time to come back to “school”!
