Mission Critical Standards for Narrower Channels - An Overview of IEEE 802.16s (Room 202B)

19 Jun 19
8:10 AM - 9:10 AM

Tracks: Business Drivers of Telecom Infrastructure

This session will provide an overview of the IEEE 802.16s standard which was approved by IEEE in 2017. IEEE 802.16s is the only standard that was developed specifically for mission critical industries. The narrower channel standard provides a standard technology that can be used in any frequency band, with channel sizes from 100 kHz to 1.25 MHz. This is useful for spectrum bands utilities have access to such as 700 MHz Upper A block, 217 – 219 MHz, 1.4 GHz, etc. This session will highlight the benefits in using standard technology, which previously has not been available in smaller channel sizes, for utilities and any critical infrastructure industry that use private wireless networks. Additionally, this session will focus on new initiatives within the standard for narrowband channels, such as 12.5 kHz, spectrum aggregation, and others. This work is being initiated now by multiple vendors and industry input is extremely important to its viability.
