This session will explore the acute hospital and health system sector themes, outlook and longer-term perspective. A recent look back at financial performance gives us some valid reasons to be skeptical of the sector’s recent performance, with continued pressure on operating margins, non-traditional competitive entrants into the industry, and continued consolidation in both the provider and payer spaces. However, looking forward, there are equally valid reasons to be more optimistic about the future, with many operational pressures already remedied, less need for capital-intensive bricks and mortar in favor of more-targeted spending, and emerging pockets of credit strength.
