You have the right to remain silent…. These words have been uttered by law enforcement officers nationwide to arrested suspects since the Miranda Decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1966. In the book Mirandized Nation: The Inside Story of Ernesto Miranda and the Phoenix Police Department, authors Timothy W. Moore and Clark Lohr demonstrate how the Miranda warnings came to be and their significance. In this presentation Moore and Lohr will take you from Miranda’s crimes in Phoenix, of rape, robbery, and kidnapping, through to his arrest on March 13, 1963, by detectives Carroll Cooley and Wilfred Young. We look at the crimes committed, court trials and his convictions, the Supreme Court decision, and how not only the Phoenix Police Department but police departments everywhere responded to the court’s decision. The presentation concludes with the crime scene in 1976 of a murdered Ernesto Miranda at the La Amapola bar in Phoenix and how his murder was investigated and solved.
