The Navajo code was created by Navajo Marines in 1942. The military vocabulary they created from a modified version of their language used simple words to relate to military terms, weapons, planes, ships and troop movements. When field tested, Marine and Intelligence officers were unable to decode what was being transmitted. The Navajo code was used in every battle from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. It saved hundreds of thousands of lives and stands to this day as the only unbroken oral military code in history. For more information, email sally-mcclain@comcast.net.
