DNA testing has become common parlance and is a pervasive example of scientific achievement. Many people rely on DNA testing to inform them of everything from their family’s history to the fate of a criminal, and yet few understand the science and techniques behind DNA analysis. This talk seeks to demystify the three types of DNA testing laypeople are mostly likely to be exposed to: forensic, paternity, and ancestry DNA testing. With convenient analogies and real-world examples, this presentation will cover the structure and statistics of DNA, how DNA profiling is performed for different types of testing, and what happens when you combine these various techniques.
