Black Swans are extremely low-probability, high-impact events that have disproportionate impact on our lives, and yet we don’t recognize their essence and concoct a posteriori explanations. Black Swans are subjective and can be positive as well as negative. Predicting Black Swans is futile, but we can change the domain of inquiry from the risk domain to the fragility domain. While assessing the risk of Black Swans is impossible, assessing our vulnerability to Black Swans is relatively straightforward. What’s more, understanding antifragility will help us to take advantage of randomness and, hopefully, catch some positive Black Swans. The lecture is based on Nassim Nicolas Taleb’s books The Black Swan and Antifragile.
