TL1 | Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Accessibility in Digital Environments (Room Dixie)

10 Jun 19
2:00 PM - 2:45 PM

Tracks: Technology Leadership

The moral and legal imperative for creating inclusive, accessible learning environments for students of all kinds is clear. Most institutions have no issue with creating physical  spaces that meet long-standing compliance obligations. Why then is it so difficult to create digital environments that are as inclusive? Even when the IT team is on board, getting most faculty to take the time to create accessible content is like herding cats. In this session you’ll get a look at the ongoing journey to create a culture of digital inclusion and accessibility at a large research university, and the various grand mistakes made along the way. The challenges of policy effectiveness and implementation scalability will be addressed, along with more recent (and hopeful!) moves toward making all aspects of the digital student experience more accessible and inclusive.
