Open Educational Resource (OER) courses throw out the textbook and instead integrate online learning mediums that provide students with a much more relevant learning experience, without the high cost of traditional textbooks. Online learning management systems and other tools can be integrated into a college student’s experience, providing them with a more intuitive learning experience. Using specific examples of courses he developed and implemented at SLCC over the past two years, Phillip Nelsen will discuss ways that modern course designs and strategies can help bridge the gap between outdated instructional methods found in many universities and the more modern non-university  learning management systems younger generations are familiar with. By modernizing instructional methods we can better compete in an ever-changing educational marketplace.
