The opiate epidemic is an enormous public health problem in America. National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) sponsored studies to indicate opiate-related adverse events and deaths are significantly lower in states with cannabis regulation. Presumably, these results are attributable to the fact that cannabis is an effective pain medicine and people are likely replacing opiates with cannabis as a safe and effective alternative. In this session, we will review exciting new research studies that provide a compelling scientific rationale for why cannabis may be a good alternative to opiates for pain. Dr. Paul Muchowski will first review mechanistic data from preclinical studies in which cannabis, or its components, have been shown to interact with pathways in pain regulated by opiates. Dr. Don Abrams will next present human studies in which cannabis has been shown to augment the analgesic effects of opioids. Together these studies present an intriguing opportunity for the cannabis industry to play a critical role in helping end the opiate epidemic.
