Tracks: Wind Flow Modeling (Special focus on uncertainty)

As wind industry build-out continues, it is more common to encounter measurements with data collected in a waked environment. What used to be considered inherent or avoidable, more commonly has to be dealt with. It is important that the wind energy analyst develop techniques to handle these situations. This presentation is intended to be educational. It will provide a summary of the various methods that have been used to handle potentially waked data – from ignoring impacts, filtering data, treating externals as roughness and actual de-waking approaches. We will discuss pros and cons of different approaches and then describe Vaisala’s preferred approach. Also, this topic is linked to wake model uncertainty, a short discussion on the uncertainty of wake models as it relates to de-waking will be included.
