Offshore WINDPOWER Conference & Exhibition 2019

e-Poster: ATOMS: a pioneer system for offshore wind large corrective maintenance. Bringing onshore means to the sea. (Room Station 1)

23 Oct 19
1:15 PM - 1:30 PM

Tracks: O&M and Asset Management

The attendees will learn of a pioneer system which expedites and greatly reduces maintenance costs of offshore wind farms. Turbine O&M is divided into scheduled/preventive and corrective maintenance; and the latter also into small and large. The presented system focuses on large corrective maintenance (LCM) which deals with the replacement of major turbine components. LCM is therefore completely dependent to date on heavy-lift vessels capable to carry out such operations and, as a result, has become one of the main drivers of the current cost of offshore wind energy. The presented revolutionary “Attachable Towable O&M System” (ATOMS) will for the first time ever allow to carry out Large Corrective Maintenance with no need for large heavy-lift vessels, by making it possible to use the much more economic and readily available cranes that are conventionally used for onshore large corrective works. As it will be shown to the audience, the ATOMS comprises a modular platform which can reach out to the wind turbine support structure and robustly be attached to it thanks to an innovative ring system. A local onshore crane is integrated on the platform to provide the LCM service. The ATOMS has already been partially demonstrated in a full scale offshore prototype project.
