Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a non-pharmaceutical approach for the treatment for insomnia. It differs somewhat from CBT used to treat other medical and psychiatric conditions.

We will discuss the following topics:

  • The future of Sleep Medicine in current allopathic settings.
  • The impact that untreated insomnia has on your patients and the treatment you prescribe for various musculoskeletal conditions.
  • The most common form of CBT-I includes the following components:
    • Cognitive Component - In its simplest representation, it is an educational element in which the patient learns more about why insomnia occurs and what to expect from the treatment components and their purpose. Additionally, addressing issues of sleep-related worry and resolving inaccurate beliefs about insomnia may be involved.
  • Behavioral Interventions
    • Sleep Restriction - A process of evaluating how much actual sleep a patient is getting and matching a sleep schedule to that amount with the use of sleep diaries. Changes of time in bed will follow.
    • Stimulus Control - This component addresses the bad behaviors that can lead to the body associating the bedroom with activities outside of sleep (ie. watching tv, doing bills, etc.) and associating sleep outside of the bed (ie. napping on the couch, etc.).
    • Sleep Hygiene - This is a list of good behaviors to maintain and bad ones to avoid for getting better sleep or preventing bad sleep (see the Sleep Hygiene page).
    • Relaxation - Multiple techniques may be employed to train the patient to better relax and prepare for sleep.
  • Treatment will continue from 2 - 12 weeks (4 - 8 being typical) with sessions being conducted weekly or biweekly. Following treatment, patients are fully equipped with the tools needed to maintain improved sleep and may improve more even months after therapy.
    • A broad overview of Home Sleep Tests for Obstructive Sleep Apnea and treatment using Positive Airway Pressure.
