Using the Pressurized Theatrical Fog Method to Locate Air Leakage Sites (Room 105)

14 Feb 20
10:45 AM - 11:30 AM

Tracks: Specialty Applications

This program introduces the low-cost, non-destructive pressurized theatrical fog method for quality assurance and diagnostics in building enclosures. It covers several ways that qualitative fog testing can be performed, including working from the inside or outside, by filling pressurized volumes, or by washing the surfaces of pressurized or depressurized enclosures. It also provides a detailed explanation of how fog testing can be used at any time of the year as an on-going quality assurance process during the construction phases of high-performance building envelopes. Sample fog testing specifications are discussed, as well as the ASTM standard practice which includes methods for verifying that adequate pressures and fog density are in place for the testing process. Case studies are included to demonstrate how this powerful visual tool is used to quality assure new air barrier system installations and how air-leakage-related energy performance problems are diagnosed.
